Fishing at Azura Benguerra

The Bazaruto Archipelago promises some of the best big game, reef and bill fishing in the Indian Ocean. Bazaruto is an extremely popular Mozambique holiday destination, attracting fishermen from all over the world. The area operates on a strict tag and release policy and guests can choose to go trawling with local guides, or learn from the specialists who offer saltwater fly-fishing, jigging for Giant Trevally and other complex techniques.

Baitfish love the shallow flats between the islands and the mainland. They lure an abundance of game fish which our fishermen love. Choose your fishing options: from light tackle fishing in the bay, to fly-fishing in the open ocean. As the fishing grounds are situated in a National Park, bottom fishing is not permitted and catch and release of all species is encouraged.

This sport is mostly done using quick sinking lines over reefs varying in depth from 10- 40m. More productive in the warmer months, fly-fishing is great fun and can be enjoyed by both the experienced fishermen and novices alike.

For those interested in a relaxed fishing experience, light tackle fishing takes place in the same areas, but live bait and artificial lures are used.

At Benguerra Island, April - September is the season for Sailfish and October - January is Marlin season. Fishing for billfish is incredibly exciting, however often interspaced with long periods of waiting. Catching the fish of a lifetime makes it all worthwhile!
